Myanmar(ex Burma) Ruby Trade Banned from the US
Since September 29, 2008 Government Regulations Prohibit Importation of Jadeite and Rubies from Burma into the United States
The new law originated in 2007 after the crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Myanmar(ex Burma).
Human rights organizations, gem dealers and eventually the First Lady Laura Bush got involved and pushed for a boycott of importing Myanmar gem stones arguing that the profits help the country's dictatorial regime.
Some serious concerns were also raised about the work conditions of the miners extracting thoses stones.
Since Burma used to supply 90% of the world's rubies including the best quality, we can expect shortages and price increases for the remaining sources (Mainly Madagascar).
