Malachite is known for its unmistakable green banding, formed as layers of the mineral build in concentric patterns. These natural bands create the bold stripes and movement that make malachite so recognizable, with each stone revealing its own unique pattern.

Velvet Malachite takes that familiar character in a softer direction. Its silky sheen moves across the surface as the stone catches the light. This optical effect, known as chatoyancy, creates a subtle glow that can make the color and pattern seem to shift with movement.

Malachite forms in the oxidized portions of copper deposits, where copper-rich minerals are altered near the Earth's surface. It occurs in many parts of the world, with significant sources including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Russia, Australia, and the United States. It has been valued for thousands of years, not only as a gemstone and ornamental material, but also as an important source of copper and a pigment for its vivid green color.
